BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Dr. Stephen M. Young will assume his responsibilities as Consul General of the United States of America in Hong Kong in March 2010.
Before arriving in Hong Kong, Consul General Young was Director of the American Institute in Taiwan from 2006 to 2009. Previously, he was the U.S. Ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic from 2003 to2005. Dr. Young joined the State Department in 1980. During his thirty-year career as a Foreign Service Officer, he also served in Moscow, Beijing, and Washington. He was Director of the Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs; Director of the Office of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh Affairs; and Director of the Office of Caucasus and Central Asian Affairs.
Most recently, Dr. Young was a member of the faculty at the National Defense University’s Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), located at Fort McNair in Washington, DC .
Consul General Young speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese and Russian and has published articles on Soviet foreign policy and Chinese politics. He earned an undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University in 1973 and a Masters Degree and Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago in 1974 and 1980 respectively.
