For more information, please contact Meghan Hagberg at 212-490-0460. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION Nancy J. Powell was confirmed as Ambassador of the United States to India on March 29, 2012. Prior to her appointment, she was Director General of the U.S. Foreign Service. Ambassador Powell served as the U.S. Ambassador to Nepal from 2007 to 2009. She previously served as the National Intelligence Officer for South Asia at the National Intelligence Council; Senior Coordinator for Avian Influenza at the U.S. Department of State; and Acting Assistant Secretary for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement. She has also served as U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan, Ghana, and Uganda. Prior assignments include Deputy Chief of Mission in Bangladesh and Togo, Acting Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Consul General in Calcutta, and Minister Counselor for Political Affairs at U.S. Embassy New Delhi. Ambassador Powell holds the highest rank in the United States Foreign Service, with the title of Career Ambassador. She was the recipient of the Homeland Security Service to America Medal for 2006 for Avian Influenza preparations. Ambassador Powell graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1970. |
