BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Mark H. Gitenstein was confirmed as the new Ambassador of the United States to Romania in July 2009. Prior to this role, he served as a partner at Mayer Brown, where his practice focused on issues of government relations. In this capacity, Ambassador-Designate Gitenstein represented corporations and associations before the U.S. Congress and federal agencies; prepared legislative strategies and analyzed pending and potential legislation; and monitored and drafted legislation on behalf of corporate clients. In addition, he advised clients in the context of antitrust, white-collar crime, and civil liability controversies.
Prior to joining Mayer Brown in 1989, Ambassador-Designate Gitenstein was the Executive Director for The Foundation for Change, Inc., in Washington, DC. Previously, he served in several senior-level government positions, including Chief Counsel to the US Senate’s Judiciary Committee from 1987 to 1989; Minority Chief Counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1981 to1987; and Chief Counsel for the Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Criminal Justice from 1978 to 1981. Mark also served as Counsel to the US Senate Intelligence Committee from 1975 to 1976 and from 1976 to1978 and, from 1972 to 1975, as Counsel to the Senate Subcommittee on Constitutional Rights.
In 1976, Ambassador-Designate Gitenstein was named a grant recipient by the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation. He is listed in Best Lawyers of America. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University, and a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center.
